We acknowledge we are on the lands of the Aboriginal people of Australia, the traditional custodians. As our group is mostly located in the south of Adelaide, we acknowledge we are on the sacred lands of the Kaurna people. We pay our respects to elders – past, presenting and emerging. The land was stolen. A genocide took place, and continues on. Always was, always will be – Aboriginal land.

The Anti-Poverty Expo, Christies Beach, SA – organised by the Low Income Action Group. Free food, free items, good vibes.

The anti poverty expo – where a number of charity groups collaborated with the Low Income Action Group. Together a fun afternoon was had by all. Excellent food was prepared by the group, and cooked together in a caring and sharing way. The event took place on Kaurna land, on the Esplanade at Christies Beach – Rotary Park. Different charities came along to join in and everyone had the caring spirit, with no agenda, and no over arching plan – other than to just give out some assistance to those in need. Alot of people attended and there were approximately ten different stalls, that had lots of different items to give away. We organised two of these events, that were quite big, so for a Very small group of lived experience advocates we believe we did something worthwhile. People who attended gave us feedback that they couldn’t believe the generosity, to receive something for nothing, and with no questions asked. People some times think others will take and take if you just give and give – but we have have found that it is the opposite of that. Most times people are very decent, and they just take what they need, and nothing more.
The only thing we didn’t have to give away was cash, or super market vouchers – but if we had access to those we would have loved to have been able to give them out too.
Money is what people need when they are hard up, and don’t have any thing. They don’t need judgements, or a hand up – they don’t need a fishing rod to go catch enough fish to live on – just some money to actually allow them to buy those items they require is what they need.
Any one who has been in that position would relate, those who haven’t would be more likely to judge, and to withhold “funds”.
